Wedding gift generosity on the rise

Weddings are a long-standing tradition in many countries, including the UK. However, such events do evolve with the times. For example, these days a rising number of people are sending electronic wedding invitations and save the date e cards, rather than physically posting such information. Not only is this more eco-friendly, it can also work out cheaper and easier.

Meanwhile, another aspect of nuptial ceremonies that appears to be changing is the amount of money guests spend on the gifts they buy happy couples.

Research conducted by Santander Credit Cards reveals that despite the economic problems affecting Britain, consumers are still splashing the cash when it comes to gifts. Indeed, the firm found that over the last two years, the amount of money individuals spend on wedding offerings for close family has doubled to nearly £80.

Also, it was noted that Britons have collectively spent in excess of £1.36 billion on wedding presents in the last year alone.

However, it was also revealed that a small number of people (around four per cent) are trying to cut back on the amount of money they spend simply because of the number of invitations to nuptial ceremonies that have been sent to them.

Some of these people may have received electronic wedding invitations and save the date e cards before booking the events in their diaries.

Meanwhile, responding to the findings, director of Santander Cards Rob Holt said: “Inflation and other economic concerns are having a real effect on people’s expenditure, but our research suggests that wedding presents are bucking the trend. Weddings can be hugely expensive for guests if you have to factor in a stag or hen weekend, transport, and accommodation, but their gift-giving generosity seems to be greater than ever.”

He added that for those who want to spend money on such presents, there are ways of spreading the cost.
