Studies show that in the event of a medical emergency, the first few moments are vital. However, should the worst happen, many people lack the necessary skills to help. In the workplace, it is essential that there is someone able to administer first aid. It is best, however, if there are a number of people available with adequate first aid training, which is why many providers offer courses at different levels.
One, two and three-day first aid courses
The three day course is for employees requiring a fully qualified first aider. The course will teach the principles behind first aid, teach CPR and teach how to deal with burns, breathing difficulties and prevent cross infection.
Awarding a HSE approved First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate, the course will also cover assessing other injuries, such as shock, bleeding and unconsciousness, and cover the legalities of providing first aid. A refresher two day course is also offered for those first aiders approaching the expiration of their certificate.
Where no need for an appointed first aider is defined for a workplace, ensuring there is at least one person able to administer emergency first aid is sensible. In these respects, the one day course is ideal.
Half day courses
There are also a number of half day courses offered by many HSE approved providers. These are ideal in many circumstances, notably to act as refresher courses each year for FAW certificate holders. These half day courses can also be used to effectively train FAW assistants and are ideal for anyone wishing to gain a basic understanding.
Being able to provide first aid is a skill that anyone would do well to learn. Never knowing when an accident or injury will occur, it’s impossible to plan when such skills will be needed. Employers, though, can plan to ensure that skills are available when called upon.
