For those making a move to the sunny climes of Spain, there is much to consider and think carefully about. An area that can be neglected somewhat, often until issues occur, is arranging adequate international healthcare. For many this may not seem to be particularly relevant, but with the marked cultural differences, alongside obvious language barriers, the opposite is very much the case.
Though state cover is possible and good, due to the high quality of standards within Spain’s healthcare system, the challenges to seeking medical diagnosis and treatment, and treatment at a fair price could be problematic. As such, acquiring private expatriate medical insurance is highly recommended.
There are a number of providers in the UK offering specialised plans for those moving to the country, and other areas of the Med, which can help smooth the process. Many of these plans also provide cover not just in the resident country, but also back in the UK. Moreover, the plans can be specifically tailored to ensure costs are kept down, but service kept high.
Restrictions do apply of course, and these vary from provider to provider so should be carefully checked. In essence however, EU nationals up to the age of 70 should not face problems with getting expatriate health insurance.
People can of course help themselves considerably; the number moving to Spain with little or no command of the Spanish language is surprisingly high for example. Simply attempting to learn is well looked upon, even if the results are not too successful, whilst the confidence given should not be underestimated.
