Are natural fibres best for nightwear?

Nightwear comes in all forms, shapes and sizes. We couldn’t go without it on those cold winter nights and can spend entire days in this clothing that is really meant for sleeping. But what type of fabric is best suited for nightwear? Are all fabrics of equal value or are certain fabrics just better at keeping our bodies warm?

There are two schools of thought: the first one believes that natural is better; the other one believes that synthetic fibres can keep our bodies as warm as natural fibres can. Who’s right? Well, that depends on your body. Not everyone feels cold when it’s -5 degrees outside so not everyone will want to feel toasty in bed. Some people are happy wearing microfleece; others swear by silk.

Flannel

Flannel is a popular choice for nightwear. The surprising thing is that flannel isn’t the fibre itself; flannel is the weave. Cotton, wool, or rayon could be used to make flannel nightwear. Its advantage is that it is warm and doesn’t crease.

Cotton towelling

Cotton towelling is generally used to make gowns.

Cotton

Cotton is the miracle fibre of the world and is perfect for nightwear. It is non-allergenic and allows the body to breathe easily. Cotton comes in 3 popular weaves: satin, twill, and plain. It is a good conductor of heat; it keeps the body cool during summer and warm during the winter.

Silk

Silk nightwear makes the wearer – generally a woman – feel sensual. This fabric is perfect for summer when the temperature is a bit higher than during winter. Silk is the perfect nightwear fabric: it improves the skin’s appearance and it feels deliciously luxurious.
