A job as a PA is not one that is as rigid and structured as many other careers. As a PA, you have the potential to have as much responsibility as anyone else in the entire company, and the more you put in, the more you are likely to get out. Whilst many PAs may start in a merely organisational capacity, many will see their jobs evolve as they gain experience and trust, to the point that they may well end up managing entire projects or teams.
However, you can’t expect to just earn these extra responsibilities and the extra pay that will come with them without putting in some hard work yourself. It is not a case of either advancing or being fired in the majority of organisations; many will be happy to keep someone with good organisational skills in a fairly benign capacity, getting in new workers or promoting other current employees as and when other more hands-on roles become available.
Hard work is obviously the first way to ensure that you progress in the way you wish. However, training can also help. Taking an executive PA course off your own back shows a willing to evolve and the fact that you wish to invest in your own career. Likewise, training in other areas can be extremely helpful, and taking a payroll course, a Sage course or one of the many other business courses available will give you even more skills to ensure you can manage projects alone.
Ultimately, never stop expanding your skill set and be sure to support your boss totally, whilst keeping an eye on all areas of the company, not just your own. The more knowledge and skills you accrue, the more you will have to offer the company and the more likely it will be that you can command a better post and a higher wage.
