Looking at the history of cushions

Cushions are a marvellous accessory in the home, workplace and even in a car when you can not reach the pedals. Shorter people will understand what the relevance of a cushion is in a car.

The earliest record of when people used cushions as a decorative piece of furniture is in the medieval period. Cushions were then used by gentry in grand houses and luxurious mansions. At that time they were not made out of the diverse materials of today, they were all made in leather. Cushions were placed on chairs and benches for a lord or lady and it was a fashion statement that was designated to a person who was considered high in rank. Cushions were not for ‘common people’ and were never used by exhausted serfs. In seventeenth century Spain, for example, a luxury cushion was a symbol of aristocratic authority.

Even today, where we have elaborate ceremonies for special royal occasions you will find luxury cushions covered in expensive velvet or a tapestry cushion that vividly depicts an historical picture. Soft furnishing of today allows a cushion to fit into any décor of a room within the home. Like all soft furnishings, your cushion can be plain, frivolous, classic or stylish. There are luxury cushions which help with discomfort and seat pads that will complement an expensive set of dining room chairs.

Our stock of cushions at Cushion Emporium come in a variety of fabrics including cotton, silk and woven, in a plain or pattern design.
