The portfolio is your way of showing what you are capable of as a model. As such, its quality is of absolutely paramount importance when you’re trying to break into the field. It’s a pretty standard idea that portfolio photos need to be professionally done, and remembering to get your hair, makeup and nails in order beforehand isn’t rocket science. So, what can you do to make sure your portfolio impresses modelling agencies?
Don’t worry about making yourself look thin, for a start. The number of super skinny models is actually pretty small, and they aren’t suitable for most modelling jobs. Be the size you are and love it. Stand up straight and hold your shoulders back- you will look more confident even if you’re nervous.
Make your portfolio broad, and make it different. Agencies need models for hundreds of different ads, and restricting your portfolio to, say, smart casual clothing doesn’t show that you can do formal wear with style or look good on the beach in shorts and a t-shirt. Market yourself seem flexible and professional- demonstrate how comfortable you are in different types of clothing and in different environments.
Look through current magazines and see what styles are being favoured right now. While the model is essentially a blank canvas who wears what she’s handed on the day especially at entry level, it doesn’t hurt to show an awareness of the fashion trade. Magazines are also a great place to look for poses to borrow for your portfolio. Pay particular attention to what models with your facial and body characteristics are being used for. Look at what colours are being worn by women with your hair and skin tone, and think about why.
If there is anything in the portfolio you don’t like, a modelling agency probably won’t like it either, so get rid of it. Make sure you’re proud of every single picture.
