What is Muscle Memory?

You may have heard the phrase ‘muscle memory’ and been extremely impressed that your muscles can be somewhat sentient. However, the memory is not something that is stored in the muscles themselves, but instead is the outcome of your brain becoming familiar with certain motor functions.

Muscles are not alone in having ‘memory.’ All areas of your motor functions will eventually be remembered by the brain from lifting weights to playing an instrument. Eventually, the more you play a riff, the more your fingers will instantly just go to the right place without you even having to have any conscious thought about it.

This is very beneficial for body building as your body will remember the steps you have taken in each exercise and recall them, remembering that building certain muscles helped to make the exercise more successful and therefore instantly knowing to start rebuilding muscles that may have atrophied.

With the help of protein powder or Creatine this process can be very quick indeed and each time you need to come back to an exercise after a long gap, the faster the process of reforming your muscles will be.

However, there is a negative side to muscle memory. If you consistently make mistakes, the motor memories will remember your mistakes and therefore it can be extremely hard to change old habits. This is the real reason that certain old habits die hard.

However, so long as you focus on what you are doing early on, you will not have to pay heed to getting the technique right later as you will have remembered it. Then, with very little effort and maybe just a little help from body building supplements such as Creatine, you may well discover that getting your body back into shape after a break is far easier than you ever imagined.
