Almost every organisation in the country will need at least one dedicated first aider, with many companies even needing to elect more than one employee to undergo training. However, with many different people to choose from in many different positions, it can sometimes be hard to choose exactly who to send on emergency first aid training.
However, there are certain qualities that will make a person more suitable for such a role than others, and even those in certain positions within the company may be far more suitable to undertake emergency first aid training.
Anyone in your company who has been elected to be a first aider will need to be fast to act and be able to remain calm under pressure. You can have all the training in the world, but if you are someone who hesitates, worries or is quick to panic, you are unlikely to be able to react quickly and effectively in an emergency situation.
The first aider also needs to be able to think on their feet and be resourceful. Not only might they need to react to a certain situation within a few seconds, but they may also need to use whatever they have on hand to help them provide the best first aid. On top of this, they should be a person who can take charge of situations, but at the same time offer reassurance and help people to remain calm, no matter what is going on around them.
Once you have worked out which members of staff fit the above description, it is worth thinking which of these are most likely to be in the right place at the right time before you pick who to send on one day first aid courses. Those in offices far removed from the majority of staff or those who may simply be out of the workplace regularly are not likely to be able to be there exactly when people need them and therefore those who are likely to be in the areas with most potential hazards and that have the qualities listed above will be the ones to send on those one day first aid courses.
