BMX: is it better to buy a complete bike or to customise?

Does the customised BMX bike or the complete, ready-made bike have more benefits? The answer depends on the individual rider.

Firstly, a beginner will often find that buying a decent entry level complete bike can provide most of what is needed for a very economical price. Purchasing individual components for construction from scratch would probably prove far more expensive. Moreover, a beginner’s relative lack of experience will often hinder attempts to source the correct components, let alone fit them together.

As a rider gains experience in BMX, however, customisation starts to become more beneficial. Complete advance level bikes can be made up of non-generic, specialist brand (or ‘after-market’) parts, which can be expensive. At this point, it may well be more economical to source, with an experienced rider’s eye of course, branded components and use them towards the creation of one’s own custom BMX.

The other factor that influences whether riders choose a complete bike or customisation is their confidence and ability regarding bicycle mechanics. Many beginners and some experienced rider, will prefer a complete bike to attempting to build from scratch, despite BMX bikes being comparatively easier to build and repair than conventional bikes (BMX bikes have only one gear for example).

On the other hand, many would argue that the distinction between buying a complete bike and customisation is less rigid; BMX riders will end up replacing parts on even the most expensive, state of the art bike, either to improve performance or because a part is broken. The fun of customisation can become a reality as buyers start to browse through the attractive range of BMX parts on the market.

At bmx.co.uk we can provide the best of both worlds with a magnificent range of great value quality BMX bikes for all levels, but also a huge supply of parts at equally competitive rates.
