What do I need to participate in racing BMX?

Racing BMX is becoming increasingly popular. People of all ages are joining local clubs and taking part in races across the country. Some who are thinking of getting started in racing BMX can however be confused as to what they require in terms of bike and riding gear.

Racing BMX is governed in the UK by the British Cycling Federation, now known simply as British Cycling. Each year, British cycling coordinates several race meetings across the country with races for different age categories held at each meeting. The age categories are further subdivided into racers with 20-inch wheels and those with 24 inch wheels. The object of these initial races is to identify qualifiers for a second round series of races, the leaders of which will then go forward to compete for the overall individual championship in each category.

British Cycling makes surprisingly few stipulations regarding the type of BMX bike acceptable for races, with the only provisions being that: stunt pegs and chain guards are removed; brakes are in good working order; tyres are knobbly and with good tread; and handlebar grips are in good condition.

It should be noted however that some freestyle (stunt) BMX bikes can be rather sturdy or heavy. It is better to buy a BMX bike especially designed for speed such as one with an aluminium frame.

Where British Cycling is strict however is on the need for competitors to wear protective gear. This means acquiring a helmet that covers the full head including a face protector (a mouth guard will suffice if there is no face protector); trousers and top that cover the whole body; and gloves. Rubber soled tennis shoes are also recommended, as are elbow, knee and shoulder pads.

At bmx.co.uk we have a range of great value bikes especially designed for racing BMX, as well as top branded protective gear.
