Which Wood to Choose for Flooring

Very few people would dispute that solid or engineered wood flooring is a great asset to any home. The beauty and warmth it can offer to any room is hard to match and the costs have come down dramatically in the past few years making such purchases affordable for most. However, there are many different styles and many different types of wood that flooring can be formed from and choosing the right one will be important if you want to get the very best quality or the very best look.

Firstly, knowing the difference between solid wood and engineered wood flooring will be a good place to start. Whilst solid wood does exactly what it says on the tin, in the majority of cases engineered wood will be a solid wood laid over a plywood substrate. This is not as high quality and will often not have quite the same feel or look, but it will be extremely close and will be very useful in moist environments, or to be laid over existing floors or directly over concrete.

With solid floors, hardwood oak flooring is the most common, with maple not far behind. The benefits of maple or hardwood oak flooring are that they are the most cost effective options in the hardwood category and that they can be finished or sanded numerous times. The majority of other options will be more expensive, but with the added cost will come higher durability and, usually, a far more interesting result.

Ultimately, the wood you choose will be mostly down to budget and individual taste. So long as you don’t have any special requirements that will mean that engineered wood will be needed, and so long as money is no object, then it will simply be a case of finding the wood you find most attractive.
