Students Love Getting Clever In Lincoln

Lincoln is a small city situated in the centre of the United Kingdom. It goes by the term ‘city’ because it has a beautiful and ancient cathedral at its heart. If you are a student looking for the bright city lights, attitude and urban adrenalin highs of, say, Manchester, Birmingham or London – don’t be fooled. In terms of scale, Lincoln rocks the town label 100 per cent. But a city? Technically, yes – in practice, less so.

With Lincoln it isn’t size you should be worrying about, it’s the quality of the experience. And in this delightful county town, students soon discover high-octane educational institutions, fully primed to propel them headlong into stellar careers. In a quiet, unassuming town in Lincolnshire, stuck on the A46 between Grimsby and Newark on Trent, students are gaining great qualifications through fine, innovative teaching.

What Lincoln lacks in glamour, it more than makes up for in modern edge. It’s been steadily building up quite a fan base amongst those in the know and in the 2016 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide it achieved top twenty ranking for graduate prospects in a number of subjects. Student satisfaction is really high here, too – in the 2015 National Student Survey Lincoln University scored in the top third. Marked out for particular attention were Psychology Courses which ranked top (1st!) nationally, and in 3rd place, came the design courses. Impressive stuff for a small uni in a Midlands backwater nobody seems to have heard of.

So what else is there to recommend Lincoln Uni? Well, if you have dreams of going into the highly competitive world of media, film and animation, TV production, sound production, photography or performing arts, the state of the art, industry standard facilities will give you an edge when you go out into the real world to find a job. Previous alumni have gone on to secure roles in TV and media – and actors from the Harry Potter franchise (Chris Rankin – Percy Weasley), Youtube stars like Tomska and TV presenters such as Dr Jonathan Foyle are all past students.

You may be rubbing shoulders with other famous people during your time here because of the Great Minds visiting lecturers programme. So far Sir Robert Winston, Angela Rippon, Chris Packham, John Hurt, Jason Bradbury and Carl Djerassi have all left their calling cards.

The beautiful Brayford Pool Campus is set on a marina with boats bobbing up and down. Lined up along the waterside are bars, restaurants and shopping outlets, giving the campus a real buzz that’s unique for an educational establishment. There is a wonderful library which is open twenty four hours a day at peak times – it’s called The Great Central Warehouse Library and it’s located in a prominent position overlooking the water.

As you would expect, for student accommodation Lincoln University delivers modern and well appointed housing on site for all first years. The accommodation blocks offer a choice of layouts and you can share with others or choose to live in a studio. Ensuite bathrooms, communal areas and well equipped kitchens are all part of the deal and living in such a central and lively location makes it a great introduction to undergraduate life. So if you are finding it hard to decide between this university and another, when you compare the student accommodation Lincoln University is sure to come out on top.

When you aren’t studying what else is there to do? Well Lincoln city is actually a beautiful place with a wonderful medieval cathedral, which incidentally, is where graduation ceremonies take place. There is a famous castle too in the town and lots of Roman history to delve into. If history isn’t your thing you can have fun taking part in Student Union Events. The union is very active and back in 2014 it won the NUS award for best student union of the year – quite an achievement. If live music is what makes you tick and you like to catch all the latest bands on tour, The Engine Room is a 2000 capacity live music venue that hosts major acts passing through. Past guests have included Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, Dizzee Rascal, Charlatans, Ben Howard and Marina and The Diamonds.
