When purchasing a new BMX bike, an experienced rider will often choose to combine different components to make a new BMX bike, rather than buy a complete bike. In this way the end product is far more likely to match exactly what the rider is looking for, whether that be a stunt bike or a racing bike.
When customising a BMX bike in this way, one of the key questions to consider is which BMX frame will be required for your bike?
A BMX frame intended for a BMX racing bike should be light in weight. Aluminium is a good material for this kind of BMX frame, although it is not the strongest of materials. The light weight of aluminium means that it will be less likely to hamper a rider’s overall speed, giving them that all important edge in competition.
Strength is a prime requirement however for a freestyle BMX bike. A BMX frame for use in freestyle should be made from a strong material, such as high tensile steel, or better still, made from chromoly, a steel alloy that combines steel’s strength with less weight. One of the advantages of customising a BMX bike is that it is sometimes less expensive to put a bike together with quality parts such as a chromoly BMX frame rather than buying a complete bike with all these parts included.
A final factor to consider is the frame size, determined by the length of the top tube. Essentially, the longer the top tube the more suitable it will be for a taller rider, whilst the shorter rider will benefit from a shorter top tube.
